Celebrate Independence! — Nathan Dahm on July 4th

Reprinted here with the author’s permission from a speech that Nathan Dahm gave to the Broken Arrow Teaparty on July 4th!  People like Nathan give us all hope for the future of our country.

Today we celebrate our Independence!

This is the day when we celebrate those enduring words, penned by Jefferson, and echoing the very definition of liberty across this planet:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

Are you tired of government alienating your God-given rights of liberty: rights to speak truthfully, to defend yourself, to worship openly, and simply to be free?  Are you tired of government taking your life and the lives of future generations by indebting us to countries like China and Saudi Arabia?  Are you tired of government enslaving your ability to pursue happiness by endless bureaucracies, ridiculous regulations, and by taxing us in life and taxing us to death?

We have gathered here not only to celebrate the birth of the greatest nation the world has ever seen, but also to exercise “The right peacefully to assemble and petition our government for a redress of grievances”; one of the last remaining constitutional rights not yet fully taken from us.

But you are already aware of the problems we face. All a person has to do is look around and see that there are plenty of problems plaguing this world. Just turn on the tv or open a newspaper and you’ll be bombarded with bad news: in the economy, in the job market, in our schools, in our churches, and in our homes. We are being assaulted on all fronts and things seem to be growing worse as each day passes.

And yet, I’m not here to talk about the problems. I’m here to talk about the answer. So what is the answer to solve the perplexities overcoming our nation? The answer is simple:…..The answer is you!  ….. The answer is me!  Each and every one of us here today contains within us the ability to
solve these problems.

With such a simple answer to these problems, I must also ask a simple question: What will you do to save our country? Our constitution gives certain powers to the federal government and reserves the rest unto the states and the people. But we have seen how the federal government and executive administrations – both past and present- have taken more power than originally granted to them. And who is to blame?  We are, for those powers were given to us, and we’ve allowed them be taken away.

Now is the time for the rightful owners to reclaim those powers.  And the rightful owners are: “We the people”.  But it is not enough that we reclaim those powers, for as god’s word says: “To whom much is given much is required”. Those of you in the younger generation are probably more familiar with the now famous quote: “With great power comes great responsibility”. It is not enough for us to merely reclaim those lost powers; we must also bear the responsibility that comes with those powers.

If you are tired of generations being left behind by government schools, what will you do about it? What will you do to change it? Will you run for the school board and change it from within? Will you choose to teach your own children at home and alleviate the overcrowded schools?

Are you fed up with our cities and states going bankrupt due to mis-management of funds? Well what will you do to change it? Will you attend council meetings and have your voice heard, or better yet, run for city council or state office like several of those speaking today?

Are you disappointed in uninformed citizens voting for the most likeable and popular candidate while remaining ignorant of the issues? Then will you stay well informed by working with groups such as IRON, OK-Safe and the others represented with tables here?

Do you want to see our city and state become an example to the world ? Then will you give of your time and of yourself to organizations like the John 3:16 Mission, and the Big Brother/Big Sister Program and help change a person’s life. Help make our country better one person at a time. Help those most desperately in need.

What will you do to change things? Will you volunteer once a month? That’s a total of 12 times a year! many of the founding fathers gave not only their lives, but the lives of their wives, sons, and daughters on the altar of liberty. Many pledged and lost their homes, lands, and entire fortunes that we could be free. With them giving so much, again i must ask, what will you do?

Others may talk about change; they may talk about hope; and they may dupe people with their empty promises. But hope is merely wishing for things not yet seen. By faith we can see those things that be not as though they were.  James said: Show me your faith without actions and I will show you my faith by my actions. Do you have faith in america? Actions speak louder than
words, so what actions will you perform?

I have faith in America, faith in Oklahoma, faith in her people, and faith in every one of you. To quote a line from one of my favorite songs: “Greater things are yet to come, and greater things are still to be done in the city.” Will you be a part of those greater things? Or just be another bystander watching from the sidelines? Will Broken Arrow, Tulsa, and the surrounding areas become a city upon a hill? A beacon and example of freedom and liberty for all to see? Will you: “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” Will you be an active participant?

As Reagan said- “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the united states where men were free.”

So I ask one last time: What will you do?
