Instant Run-Off Voting Method
Just in case the topic of ‘instant run-off’ voting comes up — it really isn’t a great method to use! In general, when in doubt say No and best to appeal to fairness issues if necessary at a convention. Always protect the ‘one sheep’ to have a voice. We can all live with a fair vote, but have difficulty swallowing being tricked or abused — so just don’t do it or let it be done to others!
Sandra Crosnoe was a part of the minority report for the rules adopted in 2008. At that time, we did not know enough about the Instant Runoff method of voting to object to its’ use. After that convention Amanda Teegarden did some additional research on the voting methods and recently documented the following thoughts:
My recommendation is that this voting method not be used for the 2012 District Convention for the following reasons:
What the people want is for the entire convention process to be transparent, open and fair, and for all the participants to play by the rules. Let the best candidate win – and I don’t mean the best at cheating. Special thanks to Amanda for this insight and for all of her research on voting methods! |
